In 2023 we saw the need for a refrigerated van to safely pick up all the donated cold and frozen goods from supermarkets in the Shoalhaven area. Through the generosity of a number of our supporters who were aware of this need, we were able to purchase a very suitable refrigerated van that has given excellent service up to this point in time. 

However as the needs of our community have continued to grow, we have now reached the stage where we require a larger vehicle for these local pickups, as well as needing something that can handle at least 3x pallets of frozen goods from the Second Bite charity that operates out of Penrith. 

After a lengthy search we found the ideal vehicle in near new condition at a very reasonable price in WA and have now had it shipped over from there. It is a small 3 seater truck fitted with a large pantec freezer which is still able to be driven with a regular car licence. It has now been pressed into service and should meet our needs in this area into the foreseeable future. 

Salt has been blessed with a grant from the EPA to cover the cost of this acquisition, with a further portion of the grant yet to be received for the provision of a larger freezer storage container in our south Nowra warehouse.

Can you imagine being made homeless on a day like today, cold, wet, and nowhere to go? This is where dedicated staff who lead with compassion and a heart for people extend a hand of help.

Salt Care’s Temporary Accommodation program continues to make a powerful difference in the lives of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. At its heart, the service provides more than just a safe place to sleep, it offers connection, dignity, and hope. Every day, the dedicated team at Salt supports people through incredibly tough times, helping them rebuild their lives one step at a time.

A man experiencing homelessness and significant mental health challenges came to Salt’s Temporary Accommodation after living in a small bush hut for five years without a permanent address. Adjusting to the structure and expectations of supported accommodation was difficult at first, but staff provided consistent support, offering meals, meaningful conversation, and connecting him with other services tailored to his needs.

Over time, trust was built, and through collaborative efforts with other Specialist Homeless Services, alternate accommodation options were explored. After three months with Salt, he was offered a community housing property. Staff helped furnish his new home, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment. Just four weeks later, he successfully regained his driver’s license and is now actively seeking employment.

His story is a powerful reminder of how compassionate support, stability, and opportunity can transform lives.

These small, human-centred acts create lasting change. Salt’s commitment to treating every person with respect and kindness ensures the Temporary Accommodation program is not just a place to stay, it’s a place to begin again.

What a month it’s been! 

Just two weeks ago, our food storage room—known as the hamper room—was nearly empty. In my three years of running the Salt Store, I had never seen it so low. Every winter, the need in our community increases, and this year is no different. As demand rises, so must our supply. 

But in that very same week, we were incredibly blessed. Two generous donations arrived—one from the combined Churches of Gerringong, and the other from Gerringong Rotary. Both groups held food drives and collected non perishable items to help support those in need. Their generosity couldn’t have come at a better time. 

If your business, church, club, or social group is able to run a food drive this winter, we would love your support. Your efforts could make a real difference for people who are doing it tough or experiencing homelessness.

Winter is showing her full face up in Sassafras now with early morning frosts coating everything in white. We have been busy prepping and clearing the ground for receiving a donation of cabins. These cabins will be another step towards being able to host people in a program on the farm in the future and we are so grateful!

The pruning of the chestnut trees has begun to prepare for another great harvest season next year. We have also planted 60 protea plants in the new flower farm extension because many of you generously donated towards sponsoring a protea. If you would like to practically support the flower farm there is an opportunity below to do so.

We are looking forward to spring, when all the new seeds will be planted, and all the leaves will start to bud on the trees, and the weather warms up a bit!
